Today is Earth Day!
From Wikipedia: Earth Day is an annual event on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection. First held on April 22, 1970, it now includes a wide range of events coordinated globally by EARTHDAY.ORG (formerly Earth Day Network) including 1 billion people in more than 193 countries.
At a meeting this morning, one of our local pastors shared a devotional based on the Psalm for this Sunday and the fact that today is Earth Day. Here is the Psalm: The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside still waters; he restores my soul. He leads me in right paths for his name's sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and your staff-- they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD my whole life long.
We were invited to listen for words and phrases in the Psalm that talked about the earth. I found green pastures, paths, still waters, dark valleys and even the food for the banquet provided by the earth.
The earth is the home God created for us. It provides everything we need for life. But, I think we take that for granted sometimes. It is obvious that we haven’t done a very good job of taking care of our home. There is a lot of work to be done to repair the damage we’ve done and prevent more from happening in the future. God calls us to be good stewards. Not just with our material possessions and money, but with the creation that surrounds us so that generations to come can walk in green pastures and beside still waters.
See you Sunday!
